Helping the world's children in our own backyard

Helping the world's children in our own backyard.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help children from low-income families acquire the necessary skills in academics and social interaction to move successfully through grades K-12 and into adulthood. We do this by providing after school and summer programs which emphasize literacy and community involvement and use the talents of teachers, volunteer tutors, adult caregivers and a variety of local support services.

Our History

The Glen Ellyn Community Resource Center opened in April 2002 with the support of the county-run DuPage Prevention Partnership and initially served the residents of the Parkside Apartment Complex.  In the fall of 2003 the Resource Center moved to the classroom space offered by the Faith Lutheran Church of Glen Ellyn and began its ongoing expansion into a non-profit corporation in order to better serve the greater Glen Ellyn community.  In subsequent years the Glen Ellyn Community Resource Center has been among the area’s most active non-profits in serving its growing number of Hispanic and African residents and we are proud to play an important role in integrating our community’s newest members.  Currently, School District 41 provides space for both after-school and summer programs.

Summer Program an Absolute Success!

From June 14th-July 9th, the Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center moved across town to Ben Franklin Elementary School and operated our half day summer program.  Over the course of the session, we instructed an average of 72 children each day!

Program Director, Jessica Rozga attributed the success to our strong program partners including the following:
DuPage County Health Department taught life skills.
Smile Squad helped with continued dental care for our students.
The University of Illinois 4-H Extension also taught life skills.
Victory Sports Camp instructed the kids in soccer.
The Peoples Resource Center offered a summer science program.
The Glen Ellyn Public Library provided a summer literacy program.
District 41 provided the location, resources and literacy and math curriculum.
WorkNet DuPage provided 5 on-site aides paid through county services.

In addition, we had 4 outstanding staff members that brought a lot of enthusiasm and expertise to each day.  And finally, there was an average of 33 volunteers to help with each days' instruction!!

Thank you to everyone who was involved.

Zach Pehta presented the Volunteer of the Year Award!

On May 27th, we celebrated another successful school year program at our annual year end open house at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.

The evening included story telling, short videos, a Yoga performance, animation storytelling and many project presentations.  At the conclusion of the evening, Zach Pehta, a daily volunteer at GECRC since the beginning was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award.  Director Jessica Rozga had this to say about Zach, "We appreciate Zach's consistent commitment to GECRC.  He is loved by staff, volunteers and children!"

Jessica Rozga leaves GECRC

Current Program Director Jessica Rozga won't be returning to the Resource Center this fall.  She and her husband Jake are expecting their first child and will be moving out of state.  Katie Galli, our current English Language Coordinator will be taking over the Program Director position.

While we are sad to see Jessica leave, we know Katie will continue the strong GECRC tradition.
